Fatwa No. ( 19365 )
Q: The imam of a mosque prayed the midday prayer one day, and at the end of the prayer he sat for the final tashahhud and forgot that he was the imam, so he said the taslim to his right and to his left in a quiet voice that we did not hear. When he finished the second taslim and before he left, he remembered that he was the imam, so he repeated the taslim a second time in a voice that we heard from him. We said the taslim with him the second time and did not say it the first time because we did not hear him. He did not perform the prostration for forgetfulness at that time. When the ma'mumun left the mosque, he performed the prostration for forgetfulness by himself. What is the ruling on his prayer and the prayer of his ma'mumun, and what is required of the imam to clear his conscience, because he is anxious about his situation?
A : The prayer of the aforementioned imam and the prayer of the ma'mumun is valid - if Allah wills - because the closing salam of the prayer was performed by everyone, and the prostration for forgetfulness is not obligatory in this case. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
