The Inability to Wear Shoes and Delegating the Stoning of the Pillars
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I inform you that I am a man suffering from a disability in my left leg resulting from an accident, which caused shortening of the leg, weakness and damage to the ankle joint, along with laxity of the foot and inability to move the foot and toes. I walk with a single cane and was prescribed medical shoes by the hospital, which I cannot walk without, as the sole of my foot has become thin. If I walk on it carelessly, it affects me and causes a wound on the sole of the foot. I have tried wearing regular shoes and attempted to put them on, but I was unable to. Your Eminence, may Allah preserve you: I am eager to perform Hajj and 'Umrah, and I am financially able, and my body is sound—praise be to Allah. I ask your Eminence, may you be rewarded, to grant me a fatwa on how I should proceed: 1- Is it permissible for me to wear sewn shoes due to the inability to wear regular shoes, which are permissible to wear in the rites of Hajj
and 'Umrah? 2- Is it permissible for me to delegate the stoning of the pillars out of fear that I will not be able to walk for a long time or stand? 3- Is it permissible for me to be carried during the tawaf due to the inability to do so? May Allah preserve you and prolong your life.
A: There is no harm in wearing the leather socks (khuffayn) that you are compelled to wear while in the state of ihram; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted one who does not find sandals to wear leather socks and did not obligate him to do anything else. And you are compelled to wear them as you have described, so nothing is required of you. It is permissible for you to be carried during the tawaf if you are unable to walk, and to delegate someone to stone the pillars on your behalf if you are unable to stone them yourself, and nothing is required of you, and praise be to Allah.
