The questioner : Tell us about the etiquettes of supplication, what are the times of acceptance, and what are the obstacles to supplication?
The Shaykh : Among the etiquettes of supplication, and the most important of them, is:
That a person should be sincere in his supplication to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and that he should know that Allah is capable of all things, that the matter is in His hand, and that when He wills something, He says to it, “Be,” and it is.
Second: That he should have good opinion of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He), and that Allah will answer his supplication, and he should not be disappointed and say, “I called and called, but I was not answered.”
Third: That he should strive to use the supplications narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), for they are the best of supplications, the most comprehensive, and the most beneficial.
Fourth: That he should raise his hands to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), except in the places where the Sunnah has come with not raising them, for he does not raise his hands in those places.
Fifth: That he should begin with praising Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), for this is among the causes of the acceptance of supplication.
As for the obstacles to the acceptance of supplication:
Among them is: that a person calls upon his Lord while he is doubtful and hesitant.
And among them is: that he is transgressive in his supplication, for Allah the Exalted does not love the transgressors and does not answer their supplication.
Third: That he is one who eats what is forbidden, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family): Indeed, Allah is Pure and does not accept except that which is pure, and indeed, Allah ordered the believers with what He ordered the messengers, so He the Exalted said: “O you who believe, eat from the good things We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is Him you worship,” and He the Exalted said: “O messengers, eat from the good things and do righteous deeds.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) mentioned the man who travels a long distance, disheveled and covered in dust, stretching his hands to the sky, “O my Lord, O my Lord,” while his food is forbidden, his clothing is forbidden, and he is nourished with what is forbidden, so how will that be answered?.
As for the places of the acceptance of supplication, among them are:
Prostration, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:. And he said: Sunan Abi Dawud 875Sahih (Al-Albani).
And among them is: supplication in the tashahhud after the final tashahhud, for when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) mentioned the tashahhud, he said:Bulugh al-Maram 2:203.
And among them is: supplication in the last part of the night, for Allah the Exalted descends (Exalted and Majestic is He) to the lowest heaven, and He says:Sahih al-Bukhari 1145.
And among them is: supplication between the adhan and the iqamah, for it is not rejected.
And among them is: dire necessity, for Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) does not reject the supplication of the one in dire necessity. As He the Exalted said:[An-Naml 27:62].
And among them is: oppression, for the supplication of the oppressed is not rejected, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) to Mu'adh ibn Jabal when he sent him to Yemen and ordered him to take the zakah:Sahih Muslim 19a.

Then he may choose any supplication which pleases him most
ثم ليتخير من الدعاء أعجبه إليهAnd among them is: supplication in the last part of the night, for Allah the Exalted descends (Exalted and Majestic is He) to the lowest heaven, and He says:
Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?
من يدعوني فأستجيب له ، من يسألني فأعطيه ، من يستغفرني فأغفر لهAnd among them is: supplication between the adhan and the iqamah, for it is not rejected.
And among them is: dire necessity, for Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) does not reject the supplication of the one in dire necessity. As He the Exalted said:
Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil
أمن يجب المضطر إذا دعاه ويكشف السوءAnd among them is: oppression, for the supplication of the oppressed is not rejected, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) to Mu'adh ibn Jabal when he sent him to Yemen and ordered him to take the zakah:
