The Etiquette and Conditions of Supplication

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
With Allah's blessing, we begin this session with a questioner from Algeria. He uses the initials (Q. B.) as a code for his name. He says: Your Eminence, what are the etiquettes and conditions that must be present in supplication to Allah? And what must the supplicant be? May we be rewarded.

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
For Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has prescribed supplication for His servants, commanded them to do so, and promised them a response. He, the Exalted, said:
Call upon Me; I will respond to you.ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ
[Ghafir:60], and He, the Exalted, said: :
And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.
[al-Baqarah:186].
Supplication has conditions, the most important of which is the presence of the heart. The person must supplicate with a heart that is present, humble before Allah, knowing that He, the Exalted, is the One who responds to supplication and that He is capable of everything (Exalted and Majestic is He). This is among the most important conditions for a response. One does not supplicate with a heedless, distracted heart. No, he turns to Allah with his heart, hoping for His response, knowing that He, the Exalted, is the One capable of everything, that He is the Rich, the Praiseworthy, and that He is the Wise, the All-Knowing.
Among these conditions is also being cautious about consuming what is forbidden. The person must care that his food, drink, and clothing are from what is lawful, and he must stay away from what Allah has forbidden him, such as riba (usury or interest) and other forbidden earnings. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, Allah the Exalted is Good, and He does not accept except what is good. And indeed, Allah commanded the believers with what He commanded the messengers, saying: "O messengers, eat from the good things and do righteous deeds" [al-Mu'minun: 51]. And He said: "O you who believe, eat from the good things We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah" [al-Baqarah: 172]. Then he mentioned the man who travels a long distance, disheveled and dusty, stretching his hands to the sky: "O my Lord, O my Lord," while his food is forbidden, his drink is forbidden, his clothing is forbidden, and he is nourished with what is forbidden; so how will that be answered? Muslim narrated it in his Sahih. This is a severe warning indicating that engaging in what is forbidden in food, drink, and clothing is among the greatest causes of being deprived of a response.
Among these conditions is also seeking the times of response. Seeking the times of response is a cause of a response, such as in the middle of the night, the last part of the night, the last third, or between the adhan (the call to prayer) and the iqamah (the second call, immediately before prayer), and at the end of the prayer before the taslim (the closing salam of prayer), after reciting the tashahhud (the testification recited while sitting in prayer), the prayer upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and seeking refuge in Allah from four things. He supplicates before the taslim.
Likewise, from when the imam sits for the Jumu'ah (the Friday prayer) khutbah (the sermon) until the prayer is completed. If he supplicates in this state, in his sujud (prostration), or at the end of the prayer before the taslim on Friday, and likewise the last hour of Friday after 'Asr (the afternoon prayer), all of these are times of response.
Therefore, what is prescribed for the believer in the state of supplication is to turn to Allah with a present heart, to strive for sincerity to Allah and good opinion of Him (Exalted and Majestic is He), to persist in supplication, to repeat it, and to ask Allah by His names and attributes and through tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah through a means) to Him (Glorified and Exalted is He) , while noting what we mentioned about being cautious of being involved in what is forbidden, whether in eating, drinking, clothing, or otherwise.
We ask Allah to guide all Muslims to what pleases Him, and to grant everyone steadfastness upon the truth. Yes.

The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you and bless you.
