The third question of Fatwa No. ( 18056 )
Q3: If a person arrives and the imam has already risen from the final bowing in the last rak'ah or is at the prostration or at the final tashahhud, and he is expecting a number of latecomers to arrive, should he wait for them or enter the prayer with the imam even if he has missed the congregation?
A3: A latecomer does not catch up with the congregation unless he catches up with a rak'ah, according to the correct view; based on the hadith:Muwatta Malik 1:15 , narrated by Muslim in ( his Sahih ), and a rak'ah is caught up by catching up with the bowing. If a Muslim arrives after the final bowing, the best for him is to enter the prayer with the imam in whatever he catches up with; due to the generality of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih Muslim 602c , and this covers what is before the final bowing and what is after it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

Whoever catches a raka of the prayer has caught the prayer.
من أدرك ركعة من الصلاة فقد أدرك الصلاةWhen the call is made for prayer come to it walking with tranquillity, and pray what you are in time for, and complete what you have missed.
إذا أتيتم الصلاة فأتوها وعليكم السكينة، فما أدركتم فصلوا وما فاتكم فأتموا
