Q: Is it permissible to recite a surah before al-Fatihah in the prayer, meaning to recite the surah first and then recite al-Fatihah?
A: It is not permissible to recite a surah before al-Fatihah in the prayer; because this is contrary to the established Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He would say the takbir for the prayer, the takbir of ihram, then he would proceed with the supplication of opening, then he would seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan, then he would say the bismillah, then he would recite al-Fatihah, then he and those behind him would say: Ameen, in the loud prayers, then he would recite after that whatever was easy from the Qur'an in the first two rak'ahs of the four-rak'ah prayer, in the Maghrib prayer, and in the Fajr prayer. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih al-Bukhari 6008 And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 1718b And Allah the Exalted prescribed for His servants to follow him (peace and blessings be upon him), so He said: [Al-Ahzab 33:21] . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
