Placing cement headstones with numbers on graves

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon the noblest of the prophets and messengers, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. After that: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from His Excellency the Governor of the Holy City of Madinah , reference number (52722), dated 20/12/1430 AH, which stated: We inform Your Eminity that the practice in al-Baqi' after burial is as follows: the deceased's relatives place black lava stones of various sizes, and the marker for some graves is large while for others it is small. Some people try to distinguish one grave from another by the size or color of the stone. Therefore, the Governorate decided to address this distinction by standardizing the size and color of the stone, making it cement, with a height of an arm's length from the fingertips to the elbow, and a width less than that. They placed a metal strip on its side
the size of an index finger, stamped with the grave number and the square plot within which it lies, without any other inscriptions; this is because some competent authorities sometimes need to identify a specific grave due to a criminal case or other issues, making it difficult to identify otherwise. We ask Your Eminity, if there is no religious prohibition in this, to allow us to continue with this arrangement
.

The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has studied the issue of placing cement headstones with numbers on graves, and after discussion and consideration, the Committee decided not to make any changes to the grave markers due to the religious harms that would result from such changes.
