Q11: A Christian man said upon his death: "There is no god but Allah." Is he to be ruled as a Muslim?
A11: One who pronounces the two testimonies of faith before the soul reaches the throat, and did not say them while in good health while practicing types of major shirk (associating partners with Allah), then dies, is considered a Muslim by that, and is treated with the treatment of Muslims in terms of washing, praying over him, burying him, and supplicating for his forgiveness and mercy. This is indicated by the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3537Hasan (Darussalam). It was narrated by Ahmad, and al-Tirmidhi, and others. It is also indicated by his (peace and blessings be upon him) story with his uncle Abu Talib, which is: , agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. He offered him the testimony of faith while he was on his deathbed, but he refused to pronounce it. In the authentic collection of al-Bukhari: But one who believes in Allah and does not believe in His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) does not enter Islam.

Indeed Allah accepts the repentance of a slave as long as (his soul does not reach his throat).
When the time of death came for Abu Talib, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to him and found Abu Jahl and Abdullah ibn Abi Umayyah ibn al-Mughirah with him. He said: "O my uncle, say: 'There is no god but Allah,' a word with which I will argue on your behalf before Allah." Abu Jahl and Abdullah ibn Abi Umayyah said: "Do you desire to turn away from the religion of Abdul Muttalib?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kept offering it to him, and they kept returning to that statement, until Abu Talib said, as his last words to them, that he was upon the religion of Abdul Muttalib, and he refused to say: "There is no god but Allah." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, I will seek forgiveness for you as long as I am not forbidden from doing so." So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) revealed: "It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of the Fire." And Allah revealed regarding Abu Talib: "Indeed, you cannot guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills."
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) visited a Jewish boy in his illness and offered him Islam, so he embraced Islam. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out saying: "Praise be to Allah who saved him by me from the Fire."
