The first question of Fatwa No. ( 15627 )
Q 1: I am one ofthe Iraqi refugeeswho were hosted bythe Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, may Allah reward it, and at its head is the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques
the King Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. We have found the Kingdom worthy of Arab and Islamic hospitality, in terms of comfort, security, medical care, and Islamic education through the field broadcasting of the International Islamic Relief Commission, which broadcasts the recitation of the Noble Qur'an and the Noble Prophetic Hadiths, in addition to the continuous follow-up by the responsible brothers regarding all needs. In any case, we are all grateful to the Kingdom and its authentic Arab people. Your Eminence, I have some questions I would like answered; regarding our prayers: Do we shorten them considering that we are traveling, or do we complete them considering that we are settled?
A 1: It is obligatory for a resident during travel, if he intends to stay for more than four days, to complete the prayer; because the rulings of travel have been severed for him due to the residence. However, if he intends to stay for four days or less, or if he does not know the duration of his stay, he prays shortened, by shortening the four-rak'ah prayer to two rak'ahs; because the rulings of travel have not been severed for him. Except if he prays with those who complete the prayer, in which case it is obligatory for him to complete it following his imam. You are of the third category, those who do not know the duration of their stay, so shortening is permissible for you, except if you pray with those who pray four rak'ahs, in which case you complete it with them as mentioned; due to the validity of the Sunnah regarding this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
