Q 1: In our city of Khor Fakkan, which is part of the Sharjah Emirate, buses come to take the university students to the city of Al Ain, which is part of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. There are about four hundred students, and the buses depart at two
thirty in the afternoon, after the Friday prayer, which is the midday prayer for women. The call to prayer for the afternoon prayer is made while they are on the road, and they do not reach the university until the time for the sunset prayer. So the question is: Do these students pray the afternoon prayer in the buses while sitting, because they are unable to stand due to the lack of space in the bus, as is well known, or do they combine the afternoon prayer with the midday prayer and pray before the time? I ask for your guidance, if you would be so kind, and may Allah reward you with good.
A 1: It is obligatory for the students to perform the prayer in its time by either delaying their travel until after the time for the afternoon prayer has entered, or by stopping during their travel in a safe place where they can perform the afternoon prayer. It is not permissible for them to advance the afternoon prayer with the midday prayer before their travel, nor is it permissible for them to delay the afternoon prayer until the sunset prayer, nor to pray in the bus. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
