Q: We are teachers from the residents of Makkah al-Mukarramah , and we work in the Lith Educational Governorate . We travel from Makkah to the school daily, and we catch the Zuhr prayer there, so we pray Zuhr shortened, and we combine it with the 'Asr prayer, shortening that as well. Please note that our school is about one hundred and thirty-five kilometers (135) away from Makkah , since we enter Makkah before the 'Asr prayer, meaning: we return to our homes in Makkah before the time for the 'Asr prayer enters. What is the validity of this action of ours? Please issue a ruling for us, may Allah reward you.
A: Your prayer is valid; because the distance you travel is a distance for shortening the prayer, and your arrival at your town before the time of the 'Asr prayer does not prevent the validity of your 'Asr prayer, since you have already performed it by combining it with Zuhr, and the time of the first prayer is a time for the second prayer combined with it. Thus, you have done what was permitted to you by the Shari'ah, and you have performed what was obligatory upon you. And if you pray Zuhr in its time before your travel and delay 'Asr to pray it as four rak'ahs in your place of residence, if you are likely to catch it with the congregation, that is better. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
