Q: I am currently an immigrant in Canada . I am Algerian, and my father used to live in Algeria . He was afflicted with a long illness that forced him to go to France for treatment there, but Allah willed that he passed away there and was buried in the Christian cemetery. It has been 26 years since his burial. Now that I have become a man and the head of a family, I want to put my conscience at ease and fulfill my duty toward my father. My question is as follows: Is it permissible to remove my father's body from the Christian cemetery and rebury him in the Muslim cemetery ? Please issue a ruling on this, and may Allah reward you.
A: It is obligatory to exhume him from the Christian cemetery and bury him in the cemetery where Muslims bury their dead. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
