The questioner : In her first question, she states that she is a married woman with five children, but she complains about her husband, whom she described as one who has abandoned prayer and fasting and is addicted to drinking intoxicants, may Allah protect us from that, even though he performed Hajj to the House of Allah and used to perform the prayer, but he returned to abandoning it and continued in abandoning it and disbelief in it. She says that she heard that she has a great responsibility toward this husband and his behavior, and that she must correct his situation. How is that possible when he is the one with authority and power in his home? Then she asks about the ruling on remaining with him in this state: does she sin or not? She also says that her husband orders her to prostrate to him when he enters the home and when he leaves, acting on a hadith he claims was narrated from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) that he made prostration obligatory for a woman to her husband. Is he correct in that or not? And is this hadith authentic or not?

The Shaykh : As for his abandoning of prayer, this necessitates that he is a disbeliever who has exited Islam, and it is not permissible for you to remain with him as long as he persists in that. If it is possible to advise him, guide him, and return him to Islam, then that is obligatory. If it is not possible, then it is obligatory for you to separate from him and leave his home, and it is not permissible for you to remain with him, because your marriage contract with him has been dissolved by his apostasy from Islam. He has no authority over his children as long as he remains in this state. As for his claim, and as for his ordering you to prostrate to him, there is no obedience to him in that, and it is a command to disbelief and shirk (associating partners with Allah). As for his saying that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that a woman should prostrate to her husband, he has lied in this. Rather, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If I were to command anyone to prostrate to anyone else, I would have commanded women to prostrate to their husbands لو أمرت أحداً أن يسجد لأحد لأمرت المرأة أن تسجد لزوجها من عظم حقه عليه
Sunan Ibn Majah 1852Da'if (Darussalam)
He is a liar in what he said and in what he attributed to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). So we ask Allah for his guidance. And you, look: if Allah guides him, well and good; otherwise, leave his home and do not remain with him.
