Q: Is it permissible to perform the funeral prayer with the congregation before the obligatory prayer in the cemetery ?
A : The original practice is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray over the funeral in the cemetery
and outside of it, and he sometimes prayed over the funeral in the mosque, and both are permissible, whether they pray before performing the obligatory prayer or after it. As for the obligatory prayer, it is not permissible to establish it in the cemetery; due to the prohibition of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding that, and likewise the voluntary prayer is not permissible in the cemeteries; due to the generality of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 529 and other authentic hadiths. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
