The funeral prayer in the mosque
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 20692 )
Q: We have a cemetery in the city of al-Uyun in the province of al-Ahsa with a canopy for the funeral prayer inside the cemetery wall. It has been given the shape of a mihrab and surrounded by a block wall 30 cm high, which was buried in sand. A place for ablution was also provided. We are bringing this to your attention to protect the sanctity of tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and out of fear that the matter may develop in the future into a mosque or prayer hall over time. To prevent this, we request that the necessary measures be taken regarding this issue. Please note that the entity responsible for this work is the Municipality of al-Uyun , with a donation from the al-Uyun Charitable Association, with the intention of doing good, if Allah wills.
A : If one does not pray over the funeral in the mosque, there is no harm in praying over it in any place in the cemetery before burial. Once the funeral is buried, one may pray over the grave, but a specific place in the cemetery should not be designated for the funeral prayer. Designating a specific place with a mihrab is a sign of a mosque where the obligatory prayers are performed. Furthermore, this serves as a means and a path to shirk (associating partners with Allah), and there is a fear that the common people and the ignorant will use it to perform obligatory or voluntary prayers. This is forbidden by the Shari'ah. The municipality responsible for this cemetery must remove this canopy to prevent this. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
