What is the meaning of the hadith: “Whoever prays over a funeral in the mosque, he gets nothing”?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The last question: What is the jurisprudential understanding of the hadith:
Whoever offers the funeral prayer in the mosque will have nothing (i.e., no reward).
Sunan Ibn Majah 1517Hasan (Darussalam)
?

The Shaykh:
He gets nothing
The hadith is narrated with this wording, and with another wording:
He has nothing upon him فليس عليه شيء
The first wording is the stronger position in terms of narration, and its intended meaning is that it does not have the reward that follows from performing the obligatory prayer in the mosque, meaning it is not included in the generality of his (peace be upon him) saying: a prayer.

The questioner :
the best prayer of a person is that which he prays in his house
Sahih al-Bukhari 731
.

The Shaykh : No,
Prayer in congregation is better than the
Muwatta Malik 8:1
, and in another narration:
By twenty-seven degrees
. This hadith does not include the one who prays the funeral prayer in the mosque, meaning he does not receive this virtue. This is the intended meaning of the hadith. But is there a sin on him if he prays in the mosque? The answer is no. Although the Hanafi scholars dislike praying over a funeral in the mosque, this dislike is refuted by what is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in “Sahih Muslim”:
That he prayed the funeral prayer over Ibn al-Bayda in the mosque
. Therefore, when they brought one of the Companions during the time of Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) to pray over her in the mosque, there was some disturbance. The reason was that the majority of the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) prayers over funerals were in the Musalla, that is, outside the Prophet’s Mosque. So Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
How quickly people have forgotten! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed over the son of al-Bayda’ in the mosque, so pray
. Yes.

The questioner : I think even
I swear by Allah, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed over Suhail b. al-Baida' in the mosque.
Sunan Abi Dawud 3189Sahih (Al-Albani)
.

The Shaykh : Except in the mosque. Yes, so the prayer in the mosque is permissible, but it is better to pray it in the Musalla. So when he (peace be upon him) said:
Whoever prays over the funeral, he gets nothing
; that is: of the reward of the one who prays the obligatory prayer in the mosque, which we mentioned earlier,
The prayer in congregation is twenty five times superior to the prayer offered by person alone.
Sahih al-Bukhari 646
. This virtue is not for the one who prays the funeral prayer in the mosque, but it is permissible for him; that is because the Messenger (peace be upon him) did so.
And Glorified are You, O Allah, and with Your praise. I bear witness that there is no deity but You. I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to You.
