The second question of Fatwa No. ( 14409 )
Q 2: What is the ruling on one who recites the Qur'an and takes a fee for it, and is there a forty as they say in Egypt and around the Sunnah? Was this on the
path of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), or did the nations after him assume it?
A 2 : Reciting the Qur'an for the souls of the deceased, or reciting in the graveyards, or hiring someone to recite for a sum of money is a religious innovation (bid'ah) that is not permissible; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do it, nor did his Companions. What is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) is that he used to greet them and make du'a' for them, and he is the one whom we are commanded to follow (peace and blessings be upon him). And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Riyad as-Salihin 1018 , which indicates that the Qur'an is not to be recited in graveyards. As for what they call the "fortieth" or the one-year anniversary, where they gather or go to the graveyard, this is also among the innovations that have no basis in the Islamic Shari'ah; it only occurred during the time of the Ummah's ignorance and weakness. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

Do not turn your houses into graveyards. Satan runs away from the house in which Surat Al-Baqarah is recited.
لا تجعلوا بيوتكم مقابر، فإن الشيطان يفر من البيت الذي تُقرأ فيه سورة البقرة
