The questioner : What is the ruling on reciting the Qur'an for the deceased in the graveyards?

The Shaykh : Reciting the Qur'an for the deceased in the graveyards is a religious innovation (bid'ah), and the person is closer to sin in it than to safety. What is prescribed (mashru') for one who visits the graves is to say what our leader, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), said, which is a famous supplication:
Peace be upon you, abode of a people of faith, and we, if Allah wills, are to follow you. May Allah have mercy on those of us who have gone before and those who come after. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you. O Allah, do not deprive us of their reward, and do not test us after them, and forgive us and them.
This is what is prescribed. As for reciting the Qur'an, it is not prescribed in the graveyard for its own sake. Yes, if a person is a memorizer of the Qur'an by heart and is in the graveyard waiting for the burial of someone, he may recite the Qur'an, but he should recite it quietly, not aloud, and he should not believe that reciting the Qur'an in the graveyard has any special merit over reciting it elsewhere.
