Placing markers on the grave of the deceased

Fatwa number ( 15679 )
Q: I hope you will issue a ruling to me regarding placing markers on the grave of the deceased . How many markers are placed on a man's grave, and how many on a woman's grave? And where on the grave are they placed, for both men and women? Is placing markers a recommended practice (sunnah) or a sign for the grave? Please issue a ruling, may Allah reward you.
A : Placing markers on the grave is a recommended practice (sunnah) so that it is known to be a grave and is avoided, and so that those who wish to visit it to offer greetings to the deceased can identify it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) marked the grave of Uthman ibn Maz'un with a stone, and the number of markers is two: one at the head and the other at the feet. They should be made of stones or something similar, and nothing should be written on them. Men and women are equal in this matter, and Allah knows best. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
