Q: If a man is sitting outside and a funeral procession passes by him, should he stand up or remain seated?
A: If a funeral procession passes by a person who is sitting, meaning he is not following it, he has the choice: if he wishes, he may stand until it passes him and he is behind it, and he will receive reward for that, if Allah wills. If he remains sitting, he is in a state of ease regarding his affair, and there is no blame on him; this is because both actions are established
from the actions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and this is what Imam Ahmad, Ishaq, and also Ibn Habib, Ibn al-Majishun, the two Maliki scholars, and others said. What indicates this is what al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated from 'Amir ibn Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:Sunan Ibn Majah 1542Sahih (Darussalam) In a narration from both of them from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), from 'Amir ibn Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: Sahih al-Bukhari 1308 As for those who claim that the command to stand is abrogated, such as Imam Malik and Abu Hanifah, al-Nawawi refuted them by stating that abrogation is not resorted to unless combining the texts is impossible, and here it is possible. He said: The preferred view is that it is a recommended practice. End of quote. No authentic evidence exists regarding the prohibition of standing, and accordingly, the sitting of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) after his command to stand is evidence for the permissibility of sitting.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

إذا رأى أحدكم جنازة فإن لم يكن ماشيًا معها فليقم حتى يخلفها أو تخلفه أو توضع من قبل أن تخلفهAnd success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
