Praying While Sitting

Question: My father prays while sitting because he has pain in his knees that prevents him from standing. Is there any harm in this? Please advise us, and may you be rewarded.

Answer: There is no doubt that standing in the obligatory prayer is a pillar of it, and it is not valid without it, provided one is able to do so;because of His saying, the Exalted:
and stand before Allah, devoutly obedient.وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ
[al-Baqarah: 238] ,And by his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
offer prayer in standing condition; if you are unable to do so, then in sitting conditionصل قائمًا فإن لم تستطيع فقاعدًا
Sunan Abi Dawud 952Sahih (Al-Albani)
the hadith. Therefore, it is obligatory for the one praying the obligatory prayer to pray standing. However, if he is unable to do so due to illness, then he
prays according to his condition, sitting or on his side;As he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Pray standing; and if you are unable, (pray) sitting; and if you are unable, (pray) lying on your side.صل قائمًا فإن لم تستطيع فقاعدًا، فإن لم تستطع فعلى جنب
Bulugh al-Maram 2:357
, so what your father did, which is praying sitting due to pain in his knee, if this pain prevents him from standing or makes it difficult for him, then there is no harm in him praying while sitting. However, if this pain does not prevent him from standing, then his prayer is not valid except by standing, because it is a pillar of its pillars.
