Questions Eight and Ten from Fatwa No. ( 20844 )
Q 8: What is the ruling on marking the grave with lime, clay, wood, tiles, or branding it with the name of a tribe or otherwise, and what is the method of dealing with what has been mentioned if it is found? Please issue a ruling, may Allah reward you.
A 8: Marking the grave with a stone or the like is permissible, and there is what indicates this in the Sunnah, namely what is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he marked the grave of Uthman ibn Maz'un with a stone. As for marking the grave with lime or the like of colors, or placing a special mark for a tribe or a group of people, all of that is an innovation, so it is not permissible. And in what is prescribed there is sufficiency, and praise be to Allah.
Q 10: What is the ruling on placing numbers on the walls of the cemetery to indicate the deceased? Knowing that these numbers have many benefits, and these numbers are not on the grave, but only on the walls. And if these numbers are established, they will eliminate many of the marks that are placed on the graves. Please issue a ruling, may Allah reward you.
A 10 : It is not permissible to place numbers on the graves or on the walls of the cemetery; because that falls under the prohibition of writing on graves or is a means to it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
