The sixth question of Fatwa No. ( 19497 )
Q 6: It is reported in al-Bukhari fromMishkat al-Masabih 30:163 . Does not the apparent meaning of this hadith indicate that he made the supplication in the bathroom ?
A 6: This mentioned hadith does not indicate that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made the supplication for Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) inside the place of relief; and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is the most exalted of people in sanctity, honor, and reverence for his Lord, such that it is not fitting to mention Him in the place of relieving oneself.
It is understood that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih al-Bukhari 143 upon his exit from the place of relief when he had finished his ablution, or when he took the water when he saw it, since Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) had placed it at the door. This is supported by what Ibn Hajar mentioned in (Fath al-Bari, Vol. 1, p. 244): (And Ibn al-Munir said: The appropriateness of the supplication for Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) for understanding in religion, in relation to his placing of the water, is that he hesitated between three matters: either to bring the water to him inside the place of relief, or to place it at the door so he could reach it from close by, or to do nothing. He saw the second option as most fitting; because the first involves the risk of being looked upon, and the third requires hardship in seeking the water, while the second is the easiest of them. So his action indicates his intelligence, and it was fitting that he be supplicated for with understanding in religion; so that benefit would be attained through it, and so it was). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
Q 6: It is reported in al-Bukhari from
He said: The Prophet entered the privy and I placed water for him. On coming out he asked who had placed it, and when he was told he said, "0 God, give him insight regarding the religion." Bukhari and Muslim.
ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم دخل الخلاء فوضعت له وضوءًا، قال: من وضع هذا؟ فأُخبر فقال: اللهم فقهه في الدينA 6: This mentioned hadith does not indicate that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made the supplication for Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) inside the place of relief; and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is the most exalted of people in sanctity, honor, and reverence for his Lord, such that it is not fitting to mention Him in the place of relieving oneself.
It is understood that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
O Allah! Make him (Ibn `Abbas) a learned scholar in religion (Islam).
اللهم فقهه في الدين
