The Difference Between Confirmed and Unconfirmed Sunnahs

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 18145 )
Q1: What is the difference between confirmed sunnahs and unconfirmed sunnahs, and are we obligated to act upon the confirmed sunnahs, or are we obligated to act upon all of them? For there are people who, when I tell them why they did not perform this sunnah, answer: because it is not confirmed. Please inform us about this, may Allah reward you with good?
A1: The confirmed sunnahs are every sunnah for which there is an exhortation from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to perform it; such as the eclipse prayer, witr, the duha prayer, and the rawatib sunnahs which it is prescribed to maintain, due to the statement of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both):
I prayed along with God’s Messenger two rak'as before and two rak'as after the noon prayer, two after the sunset prayer in his house, and two after the evening prayer in his house.حفظت من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ركعتين قبل الظهر، وركعتين بعدها، وركعتين بعد المغرب، وركعتين بعد العشاء، وركعتين قبل الفجر
Mishkat al-Masabih 1160
, and the statement of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her):
Narrated 'Aishah: "The Prophet (ﷺ) would not sleep until he recited Surat Bani Isra'il and Az-Zumar."كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم لا يدع أربعًا قبل الظهر
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2920Hasan (Darussalam)
narrated by al-Bukhari in (his Sahih), and these sunnahs make up for any deficiency that occurs in a servant's obligatory duties. It is recommended for the Muslim to perform all the sunnahs reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to the extent of his ability; because it is reported in the Qudsi Hadith:
and My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (praying or doing extra deeds besides what is obligatory) till I love himولا يزال عبدي يتقرب إلي بالنوافل حتى أحبه..
Sahih al-Bukhari 6502
etc. of the hadith. However, they are not obligatory, but rather voluntary; whoever leaves them commits no sin.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
