2- Fortune-telling :
Q: A man appeared who claims to be a wali (close friend of Allah) among the righteous awliya (close friends of Allah) to whom Allah has granted karamahs (miracles granted to a righteous person) . He says: that he is able to heal any sick person with a touch of his hand, and that he challenges the doctors of the world to heal a patient in moments or a short time. This is what appeared in a report exclusive to one of the local dailies. What is strange and astonishing is that this karamah (a miracle granted to a righteous person) occurred to him on the day his father died. He says: that after he washed his father, he bathed with the water that had been used to wash his father, and then he became ill. And he says: I saw a strange dream, in which he saw Paradise and most of its people were children, and he saw the Fire and most of those entering it were women, and they were in large lines. And that he saw a blind person, so he rubbed his eyes and he could see. And since he woke up, he has been telling people, and he began to treat people, so it became
people come to him from every direction, and among what he conditions for the patient is that he spend the night with him, and that he come to him submissive, not doubting that he might be a Dajjal (the false messiah) or a sorcerer. My honorable masters: As I told you before, groups and groups traveled to him, even to the village where I live, anyone with a disability or illness or whispering went to him hoping to find healing at the hands of this person. And when I was ordered to go to him, I rebuked them, and I said: that his matter contains a shubhah (a doubtful matter), so the people began to look at me as if I were a criminal, and I seek refuge in Allah, or as if I were their enemy. Whenever I take my way to the mosque, I find that when they see me coming, they talk about me, and when they meet me, they blame me for not going to this righteous man, as they claim, to heal me of my disability, and some of them assert his ability to do so. I have come to suffer from these actions, even from the people closest to me. I asked some of those who went to him, and one of them says: I saw with my own eyes that he made a young man speak who had not spoken for twenty years, and another says: I saw him order a woman walking on two crutches to throw them away, then he ordered her to walk, and she did. And another told me: that my grandfather was suffering from weak eyesight, so he went to him and his eyesight became normal. Etc. And his method of treatment, as far as I can see, is contrary to the Shari'ah (Islamic sacred law), as I was told, and he said in the newspapers that he massages with water and oil that
comes out of his hand, and Allah knows how it comes out, and some of them spit for them into a water bottle and then order them to drink from it three times when they return to their homes. And I asked them: Is there any du'a' (supplication) or anything from the Qur'an that he recites? Some say: Yes, and some say: We see him silent and he only nods his head, and Allah knows. I ask you to issue a fatwa (a scholarly legal ruling) and answer me with a sufficient answer that removes the confusion from me, and it is indeed a fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) that we have been tried with.
A: This man mentioned is considered one of the Dajjals (the false messiah) and sorcerers; because only Allah is able to heal the sick, and the occurrence of healing merely by rubbing the sick person is something that did not happen except for 'Isa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him) as a mu'jizah (a prophetic miracle) for him. And a wali (close friend of Allah) is the righteous, believing, pious servant. Allah the Exalted said:[Yunus 10:62-63] , and a true wali (close friend of Allah) does not say: I am a wali (close friend of Allah), nor does he call people to magnify him, and seek healing from him. So it is obligatory to refute this person and warn against him and his evil, and it is not permissible to go to him, due to his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan al-Bayhaqi 15:741 . And this is like the fortune-teller; because he claims that he knows what is in
the sick person and is able to heal him merely by rubbing him, and the fact that he brings out oil and water from his hand and rubs people with it is evidence of his seeking help from the Shayatins (Satan). And the harm that befell you because of refuting this Dajjal (the false messiah) and not being deceived by him and warning people against him, we advise you to be patient with it, for Allah has made that something by which the status of the callers and those who enjoin good and forbid evil is raised. Allah the Exalted said:[As-Sajdah 32:24] .
