The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He said, may Allah have mercy on him: "Chapter on what is recited for the sick person. It was narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when a person complained of something in his body, or had a sore or a wound, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say with his finger like this, -and Sufyan ibn Uyaynah, the narrator, placed his index finger on the ground and then lifted it- and he would say:
In the name of Allah, the dust of our land, with the saliva of some of us, may our sick person be healed by it, by the permission of our Lord
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 54:73
Agreed upon. And from her (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to visit some of his family, wiping with his right hand and saying:
Adhhibil-bas, Rabban-nas, washfi Antash-Shafi, la shifa’a illa shifa’uka shifa’an la yughadiru saqama (Take away the pain, O Lord of mankind, and grant healing, for You are the Healer, and there is no healing but Your healing that leaves no trace of sickness)
Sunan Ibn Majah 3520Sahih (Darussalam)
Agreed upon"

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
When the author, may Allah have mercy on him, al-Nawawi, mentioned in his book *Riyad al-Salihin* what indicates the recommendation of visiting the sick, he mentioned what is recited for the sick person and what is done for him. He mentioned two hadiths from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). As for the first, if the sick person has a wound or a sore or something similar, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would wet his finger, then wipe it on the ground, taking some of the soil with this moisture, then wipe the wound with it and say:
The dust of our land with the saliva of some of us; by it our sick person is healed, by the permission of our Lord.
This indicates that a person should treat a wound with something like this, by wetting his finger, then wiping it on the earth that has soil, then saying what was narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). The reason for this is that soil is a purifier, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
its dust has been made a purifier for us
Sahih Muslim 522a
And the saliva of a believer is also pure, so the two purifiers come together with strong reliance upon Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and trust in Him, and the sick person is healed by it. But two things are necessary. The first is: strong certainty in this supplicant that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) will heal this sick person with this ruqyah. The second is: the acceptance of the sick person of this and his belief that it will benefit him. As for if the matter is done on the basis of experimentation, then it will not benefit him, because one must be certain that what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did is good, and the place must be receptive, meaning the sick person must believe in the benefit of it. As for if he is not a believer, he will not benefit, because those in whose hearts is disease, the verses do not increase them except in disbelief, and I seek refuge in Allah. As for the second hadith, it was that when he visited some of his family, he would say
Sunan Ibn Majah 3520Sahih (Darussalam)
and wipe with his right hand, meaning he would wipe the sick person and recite for him this
O Allah, the Lord of the people! Remove the trouble
Sahih al-Bukhari 5743
So he seeks nearness to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) through His general Lordship. He is the Lord (Glorified and Exalted is He), the Creator, the Owner, the Manager of all affairs. So you, O sick person, say: Allah (Mighty and Majestic) created me and there is no harm in me, then He decreed illness upon me. And the One who decreed illness upon me after health is able to remove the illness to health, because He is the Lord of mankind, doing what He wills (Mighty and Majestic).
Remove the affliction
This is a supplication: "Remove the affliction," meaning the illness that has befallen this sick person.
Heal, You are the Healer
And healing is the removal of illness and the recovery of the sick person, so it is said: "Heal," and it is not said: "Kill," because if you say "Kill," its meaning becomes you destroy him. And if you say "Heal," its meaning is recovery, meaning that You cure him from the illness. For this reason, it is said: "O Allah, heal so-and-so, and do not kill him" The two words, for the common people, may have the same meaning, but there is a great difference between them. "O Allah, heal" means cure him from the illness. "And do not kill him" means do not destroy him. "Heal, You are the Healer" is one of the names of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), because He is the One who heals the illness. And what is made of medicines or recited of ruqyah is nothing but a cause that may benefit or may not benefit, for Allah is the One who causes (Mighty and Majestic). For this reason, sometimes two men get sick with the same illness and are treated with the same medicine and the same prescription, and this one dies and this one is saved, because the whole matter is in the hand of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). He is the Healer, and what is done of ruqyah or medicines is only a cause. But we are commanded to take the cause, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
so treat yourselves medically, but use nothing unlawful.
Sunan Abi Dawud 3874Da'if (Al-Albani)
And he said:
Allah does not send down any disease, but He also sends down the cure for it.
Sunan Ibn Majah 3438Sahih (Darussalam)
And his saying:
there is no healing but Your healing
Sunan Ibn Majah 3520Sahih (Darussalam)
It is not the doctor who heals you, nor is it the medicine. Rather, the doctor is a cause and the medicine is a cause, and the Healer is Allah.
that leaves no trace of sickness
Sunan Ibn Majah 3520Sahih (Darussalam)
A person should, when visiting the sick, wipe him with his right hand and say this supplication:
Adhhibil-bas, Rabban-nas, washfi Antash-Shafi, la shifa’a illa shifa’uka shifa’an la yughadiru saqama (Take away the pain, O Lord of mankind, and grant healing, for You are the Healer, and there is no healing but Your healing that leaves no trace of sickness)
Sunan Ibn Majah 3520Sahih (Darussalam)
And success is from Allah.
