The Prayer of the Sick Person

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 15916 )
Q: I am suffering from rheumatism, to the extent that I cannot move my body or either of my hands. Indeed, eating and drinking have become difficult for me, so I am unable to perform the full ritual bath or the ablution, and even dry ablution. I have heard that prayer is not dropped under any circumstances, so what is obligatory for me?
A : The matter is as you heard, that prayer is not dropped from the Muslim as long as his mind is sound, but he prays according to his condition; for Allah the Exalted said:
So fear Allah as much as you are ableفَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ
[At-Taghabun 64:16]
, and regarding the condition you mentioned, that you are unable to perform the ablution or the dry ablution yourself: if there is someone who can perform the ablution for you if possible, or perform the dry ablution for you by striking the earth with his hands and wiping your face and hands with it, if the ablution with water is not possible, and then you pray, this is obligatory for you. And if there is no one to perform the ablution for you and no one to perform the dry ablution for you, then you pray according to your condition without ablution or dry ablution, and you do not leave the prayer; for when one of the Companions asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): How does he pray while he is sick? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
offer prayer in standing condition; if you are unable to do so, then in sitting condition: if you are then at your sideصل قائمًا فإن لم تستطع فقاعدًا، فإن لم تستطع فعلى جنب
Sunan Abi Dawud 952Sahih (Al-Albani)
narrated by al-Bukhari in ( his Sahih )
al-Nasa'i added with a sound chain:
If you cannot do so, then lying on your sideفإن لم تستطع فمستلقيًا
And for Allah the Exalted’s saying:
And if you are sick or on a journeyوَإِنْ كُنْتُمْ مَرْضَى أَوْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ
to His saying:
then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands [with it]فَتَيَمَّمُوا صَعِيدًا طَيِّبًا فَامْسَحُوا بِوُجُوهِكُمْ وَأَيْدِيكُمْ
[An-Nisa 4:43]
. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
