The Imam’s Supplication for Himself Alone
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 17529 )
Q 1: Is it permissible for the imam to supplicate for himself alone in the obligatory prayer in congregation, during prostration and during the sitting for the closing salam?
Vol. 1: It is permissible for the imam and the followers to supplicate for themselves individually, as the worshipper says: “O my Lord, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, grant me well-being, restore me, and provide for me.” And as The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say in his prostration: Sahih Muslim 483 . However, if the imam supplicates for himself and others aloud during the qunut and in the Friday sermon and other occasions, he should not limit the supplication to himself to the exclusion of them, but rather use the plural form; for what al-Imam al-Tirmidhi narrated from Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 357Sahih (Darussalam) . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) to say in his prayer: “O my Lord, I have wronged myself greatly, and no one forgives sins except You, so forgive me a forgiveness from You and have mercy on me, for You are the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.”
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advised Mu’adh (may Allah be pleased with him) to say after every prayer: “O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You in the best manner.”
O Lord, forgive me all my sins, small and great, first and last, open and secret.
It is not allowed for a man to look into the interior of a man's house until he has been given permission, for if he looks, then he has entered. And one who leads people (in Salat) should not supplicate for himself alone with the exclusion of his congregation. If he does, then he has betrayed them. And one is not to stand for Salat while he has to urinate.
