The Ruling on Supplication in the Obligatory Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner E. E. A. - Minufiya, Egypt - asks: Is it permissible for the one praying to make supplication in his obligatory prayer, for example, after performing the pillars and obligations, such as saying in prostration after "Subhan Rabbi al-A'la": "O Allah, forgive me and have mercy on me," and the like? I hope you will inform me of the necessary dhikr for that?

Answer:
It is prescribed for the believer to make supplication in his prayer at the places of supplication, whether the prayer is obligatory or voluntary. The place of supplication in the prayer is in prostration, between the two prostrations, and at the end of the prayer after the tashahhud and the sending of blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and before the taslim. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he used to make supplication between the two prostrations seeking forgiveness, and it is established that he used to say between the two prostrations:
O Allah, grant me pardon, have mercy upon me, direct me to the path of righteousness and provide me sustenance.
Sahih Muslim 2697a
.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Glorify your Lord in Ruku' (bowing posture) and exert yourself in supplication in prostration. Thus your supplications are liable to be accepted.
Riyad as-Salihin 1427
, narrated by Muslim in his Sahih. Muslim also narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The nearest a servant come to his Lord is when he is prostrating himself, so make supplication often.
Sunan Abi Dawud 875Sahih (Al-Albani)
.
And in the two Sahihs from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he taught him the tashahhud, said:
Then let him choose from the requests whatever he wishes
, and in another wording:
Then he may choose any supplication which pleases him most and recite it.
Bulugh al-Maram 2:203
.
The hadiths in this meaning are numerous, and they indicate the lawfulness of supplication in these places with whatever the Muslim loves of supplication, whether it relates to the Hereafter or to his worldly interests, on the condition that there is no sin or severing of family ties in his supplication. It is better to increase in the supplications narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And success is from Allah.
