Questions 35 and 36 from Fatwa No. ( 18612 )
Q35: Is it true that " Zamzam is for what it is drunk for " and "Ya Sin is for what it is recited for," and that these are authentic hadith texts?
A35: First: The hadith:
The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.ماء زمزم لما شُرب له
Sunan Ibn Majah 3062Hasan (Darussalam)
This is a famous hadith narrated by Imam Ahmad and Ibn Majah and al-Bayhaqi and others from the hadith of Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with them both), traced to the Prophet, and more authentic than it is what Muslim narrated in his (Sahih) from Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding Zamzam :
It is blessed (water) and it also serves as foodإنها مباركة، إنها طعام طعم
Sahih Muslim 2473a
And Abu Dawud added with a sound chain:
and a cure for sicknessوشفاء سقم
. Second: The hadith: "Ya Sin is for what it is recited for" has no basis.
