Fatwa No. ( 3828 ):
Q: I am a twenty-year-old Muslim woman, committed to my religion, and have been married for about a year and a half. By the grace of Allah, I gave birth to a child about six months ago, and the delivery was natural, praise be to Allah. About a week after the birth, I was afflicted with a severe state of distress. I had never experienced this condition before, and I lost the ability to care about anything, even my newborn. I consulted a psychological specialist and underwent treatment until recently, but this treatment did not restore me to my pre-birth state, and I have grown weary of the long period of treatment. I ask Allah to grant you success in finding a Shari'ah-based treatment for this distress and psychological depression, or the optimal treatment, so that I may return to my normal state and care for my husband and son and serve the household. I have heard in the past a hadith that says:Sunan Ibn Majah 3062Hasan (Darussalam) I therefore ask Allah, then you, to clarify this hadith: does it apply to my psychological condition, or is it for physical conditions? And if the water of Zamzam is beneficial, by the permission of Allah, in curing this condition of mine, how can it be brought to me?
A: Have trust in Allah the Exalted and hold a good opinion of Him, and entrust your affair to Him. Do not despair of His mercy, bounty, and kindness, for He, Glorified and Exalted is He, has not sent down a disease without sending down a cure for it. You must also take the means: continue to consult specialized doctors who know diseases and their treatments. Recite over yourself Surat al-Ikhlas, Surat al-Falaq, and Surat al-Nas (three times), and spit lightly into your hands after each recitation, then wipe your face and as much of your body as you can with them. Repeat this many times, night and day, and when sleeping. Also recite over yourself Surat al-Fatihah at any time of night or day, and recite (Ayat al-Kursi) when you lie down in your bed to sleep. This is among the best means by which a person performs ruqyah on himself and protects himself from evil. And supplicate to Allah the Exalted with the supplication for distress, saying:Riyad as-Salihin 1502 , and also perform ruqyah on yourself with the ruqyah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), saying: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 973Sahih (Darussalam) ... and so on, of the dhikr, ruqyah, and supplications mentioned in the collections of hadith, and mentioned by al-Nawawi in the book [Riyad al-Salihin] and the book [al-Adhkar].
As for what you mentioned about the water of Zamzam , that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Ibn Majah 3062Hasan (Darussalam) , it was narrated by the Imam Ahmad and Ibn Majah , from Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah , from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It is a hasan (good) hadith, and it is also general. More authentic than it is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the water of Zamzam : narrated by Muslim and Abu Dawud , and this is the wording of Abu Dawud . If you wish to have some of it, you can instruct someone from your country who performs Hajj to bring some of it back to you upon his return from his Hajj. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
