The first and second questions from Fatwa number ( 10701 )
Q 1: In ( Tafsir Ibn Kathir ) regarding verse number ( 260 ) of Surat al-Baqarah[Al-Baqarah 2:260] the verse. An authentic hadith was reported from al-Bukhari in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih al-Bukhari 4537 . We ask for clarification of what is meant by doubt here. The commentary states that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) denies doubt regarding our master Ibrahim, so how is that possible given that our understanding of the verse is that our master Ibrahim was going through a period of doubt before his faith was complete?
A 1: The meaning of this hadith is: denying doubt regarding the intimate friend of Allah, Ibrahim (peace be upon him), as mentioned by the scholar Ibn Kathir and other commentators on the hadith. The intended meaning of the hadith is: If the intimate friend of Allah, Ibrahim, had doubted, we would be more deserving of doubt than he was, but we did not doubt so Ibrahim is more deserving of being free from doubt than we are. This is supported by what came in the same verse in the response of the intimate friend
Ibrahim (peace be upon him) when his Lord, the Exalted, asked him:[Al-Baqarah 2:260] , and Allah the Exalted approved of him and confirmed his report about himself that he is a believer, but he sought an increase in faith and tranquility. Therefore, the scholars of tawhid (the oneness of Allah) cited this verse as evidence for the variation in faith, and that it increases and decreases with the increase of obedience and evidence. Thus, faith based on sensory evidence and direct observation is stronger than faith based on auditory and rational evidence. And from the text of the verse, in question and answer, and from the intended meaning of the hadith, it becomes clear that Ibrahim (peace be upon him) did not doubt.
