Q 2: Ibn Kathir mentioned in his tafsir of Surat al-Baqarah, on the same page, in connection with his interpretation of verse number (260), a hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih al-Bukhari 3372 And according to our understanding, the caller in the story of our master Yusuf is the wife of the Minister. Does this mean that the Prophet intended that if he had been imprisoned like our master Yusuf, he would have responded to her request? What is your opinion of this hadith?
A 2: The wife of the Minister is not the caller in the verses in which this hadith was reported; rather, the caller in these verses is the messenger of the King. Allah the Exalted said:[Yusuf 12:50]
These are the verses. This was after his entry into prison, his interpretation of the King’s dream, and the preparation of the means for his release from it. As for his story with the wife of the Minister and her invitation of him to evil, that was before his entry into prison. Accordingly, the meaning of the hadith is: There is no disgrace in this for the two prophets (peace and blessings be upon them). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
If I were to stay in prison for such a long time as Joseph did I would have accepted the offer (of freedom without insisting on having my guiltless less declared).
