Q3: It is said that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said regarding Wadd, Suwa', Yaghuth, Ya'uq, and Nasr : "They were the names of righteous men from the people of Noah..." to the end of his statement. How can they be from the people of Noah when the original message of Noah was to stand against these idols? Should not these be the names of righteous men from the people of (Adam and Idris), and then when they died and knowledge was forgotten, the people of Noah made the idols and worshipped them, and Noah stood against them in denial? Then how can knowledge be forgotten in the statement of Ibn Abbas while Noah denied them night and day, in secret and in public?
A3: The view of the majority of scholars is that Wadd Suwa' Yaghuth Ya'uq and Nasr are idols and images of righteous men that the people of Noah worshipped in the time of Noah, and the Arabs worshipped them after that, and this is what Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) held. As for the original existence of these righteous men who bore these names, the scholars differed on that: The first opinion: Ibn Jarir said: Ibn Humayd narrated to us, and he narrated to us from Mahrān ,
fromSufyan, fromMusa, fromMuhammad ibn Qays : He said: They were a righteous people from the descendants of Adam, and they had followers who emulated them. When they died, their followers who emulated them said, "If we were to make images of them, it would make us more eager for worship when we remember them." So they made images of them. When they died and others came, Satan crept in to them and said, "They only worshipped them, and through them rain was sent down." So they worshipped them, and the worship of idols began from that time. When Allah sent Noah after that, they said, "Do not leave your gods, and do not leaveWaddnorSuwa'... and so on. He saidSufyanfrom his father fromIkrimah(may Allah be pleased with him) said: There were ten generations between Adam and Noah, all of whom were upon Islam. See (Tafsiral-TabariVol. 23, p. 639), and (Tafsiral-QurtubiVol. 9, pp. 307-308), and (TafsirIbn KathirVol. 4, p. 426). The second opinion: The well-known view fromIbn Abbas(may Allah be pleased with them both) is that these idols were the names of righteous men fromthe people of Noahnarratedal-Bukhariin (his Sahih) from'AtafromIbn 'Abbas(may Allah be pleased with him and his father) said: The idols that were amongthe people of Noahremained among the Arabs afterwards, as for Wadd, it was for Kalbat Dumat al-Jandal, and as forSuwa'it wasfor Hudhayl, and as forYa'uthit wasfor Muradthenfor Banu Ghatifal-JurufatSaba, and as forYa'uqit wasfor the people of Himdan, and as forNasrit wasfor Hamirfor the family of Dhi al-Kila', and these were the names of righteous men fromthe people of Noah(peace be upon him), and when they died, he inspired
The devil inspired their people to erect statues in the places where they used to sit and name them after them. They did so, but they were not worshipped until those first people died and knowledge was erased from the hearts of men, and then they were worshipped. Similar to this was narrated from Ikrimah al-Dahhak Qatadah and Ibn Ishaq. See (Tafsir Ibn Kathir vol. 4, p. 426), and (Tafsir al-Qurtubi vol. 9, p. 308). According to this opinion, the meaning of the statement of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that these idols are the names of righteous men from the people of Noah is: from the people among whom Noah was sent, and they were upon Islam before Noah (peace be upon him) was sent to them. When they died, their people made images of them to remember them and to take them as examples, but they were not worshipped at that time. When those first people died and knowledge was erased from the hearts of men, they worshipped them, and shirk (associating partners with Allah) spread among them, so Allah sent Noah (peace be upon him) to them to deny that and call them to the worship of Allah alone. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
