The belief that precious stones possess special properties

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 21469 )
Q: Some enthusiasts of rings and precious stones, such as Yemeni agate, Iranian turquoise, and others, believe that these stones possess unique properties, secrets, and benefits that other stones do not have. They promote this through advertisements and cite hadiths and statements mentioned by
the author of the book (Al-Mustatraf), namely the saying of Ja'far ibn Muhammad : "No hand that wears a turquoise ring has ever become poor." And their statement: "It is said: There are four types of rings: ruby for thirst, turquoise for wealth, agate for the Sunnah, and Chinese iron for protection and fear." They mentioned among the properties of turquoise that looking at it clarifies and strengthens the vision, invigorates the soul, and that the wearer is not afflicted by harm from the front or by drowning. And Ja'far al-Sadiq said: "No hand that wears a turquoise ring has ever become poor." As for the properties of agate, wearing it and carrying it begets forbearance, patience, sound judgment, and peace of mind, and it endows the wearer with dignity and good character, and calms anger during disputes. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(Whoever wears an agate ring will not cease to be in blessing)." This ends with some modification. These hadiths and statements are depicted in this book and distributed. When I saw that and asked about it, they said: These are secrets. And when I discussed it with them and told them: As far as I know, these stones are not better than the Black Stone in the Ka'bah,
I know that you are only a stone and you can neither cause harm nor bring benefit. Had I not seen the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) kissing you, I would not have kissed you.وقد قال عمر بن الخطاب : إني لأعلم أنك حجر لا تضر ولا تنفع، ولولا أني رأيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقبلك ما قبلتك
Sunan Ibn Majah 2943Sahih (Darussalam)
. They said: Allah has placed in them a special property, and experience is the greatest proof. They mentioned some stories, including: that a man had a ring
which, when a person wore it and had intercourse, he would not ejaculate until he removed it from his hand, as the groom would borrow it on his wedding night. And another: that a man went to a barber to have his head shaved, but the barber could not shave it, so the barber asked him the reason; he took a ring from his waistband and moved it away, and then the barber shaved him. There are many other such stories, and we seek help from Allah. The question, O honorable Shaykh: Is there a valid hadith or a reliable statement in this matter? Is what is mentioned in this book valid and to be cited as evidence? Do these stones have features that distinguish them from others? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.

A: There is no valid hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the virtue of the aforementioned rings and stones or their properties. Therefore, it is not permissible to attribute to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what he did not say. It is established that he said:
He who lies about me deliberately will certainly come to his abode in Hell.من كذب عليَّ متعمدًا فليتبوأ مقعده من النار
Sunan Abi Dawud 3651Sahih (Al-Albani)
. It is also not permissible for a person to believe in the virtue of those rings, nor is it permissible to believe in the stories and myths woven around them. The book (Al-Mustatraf) is not to be relied upon in matters of knowledge and religion. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
