How to Calculate the Zakah of Gold Set with Gems and Precious Stones

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What is the method for paying the zakah of jewelry when the gold is not pure on its own, but is set with various types of gems and precious stones? Should the weight of these stones and gems be counted along with the gold, since it is difficult to separate the gold from them?

A: It is the gold that is subject to zakah, while there is no zakah on precious stones and diamonds if they are not for trade. If necklaces and the like contain both gold and stones, one should consult people of expertise to estimate the amount of gold in them. If the gold reaches the nisab, it must be purified. The nisab is twenty mithqals, which is eleven and three-sevenths of a Saudi riyal, or 92 grams. It is purified every year.
The obligatory amount is one-quarter of one-tenth, which is twenty-five from every thousand. This is the correct opinion among the scholars regarding gold and silver jewelry intended for wearing or lending.
However, if the jewelry is for trade, zakah is obligatory on the entire jewelry and the stones within it based on their value, like other trade goods, according to the majority of scholars, and some of them reported it as a consensus.
