Supplication after the closing salam of the obligatory prayer

Fatwa No. ( 14791 )
Q: In recent times, there has been much debate and discord among scholars in various regions of Bangladesh regarding the issue of supplication after the closing salam of the obligatory prayer . The imam raises his hands facing the qiblah, and the congregation follows him after each of the five obligatory prayers on a regular basis. The congregation also follows him by saying "O Allah, amen... O Allah, amen..." only by raising their hands and raising their voices, and at the end, they wipe their faces with their hands and conclude the supplication. This has led to conflict, fighting, and division among the scholars themselves and among the common people who follow the scholars. Some say it is a religious innovation, while others say it is permissible and a recommended practice. We request your eminence to clarify the truth in this matter, supported by evidence from the Book and the Sunnah, along with the opinions of the scholars on this. We also request clarification on the etiquettes and methods of supplication, and mention of the places where collective supplication is permissible. I offer you my sincere thanks, and your fatwa will have a significant impact in resolving the disagreement, if Allah wills. Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings.
A: Muslims must know the validity of what they do in their prayers and supplications, and whether it is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) or whether it is a religious innovation that has been introduced and time has passed until people have become accustomed to it and assumed it to be among the obligations of the religion
for which they become angry. It should be known to the Muslim that these innovations are not among the innovations that constitute disbelief, which distance the Muslim from Islam or invalidate the prayer of one who performs them, but rather they are among the innovations that have no basis in the religion, and the Muslim is not rewarded for performing them; because they are not established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Therefore, it is not permissible for Muslims to fight among themselves over them, or to leave the mosque and abandon the congregation because of that. Rather, the Muslim should pray behind the one who does that, while informing him of its impermissibility and disapproving of it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
