The first question of Fatwa No. ( 18370 )
Q 1: In the book (*Samir al-Mu'minin fi al-Mawa'iz wa al-Hukm wa al-Qasas*), by its author Muhammad al-Hajjar , pages 171, 172, fifth edition of the year 1406 AH, Dar al-Nafis, it is stated: “And that Allah the Exalted has twenty attributes established by the Book, the Sunnah, and the consensus of the Ummah, and the scholars of tawhid (the oneness of Allah) divided them into four categories: 1- An essential attribute, which is: existence. 2- Negative attributes, which are: oneness, eternity, permanence, subsistence by Himself, and His being unlike created things. 3- Attributes of meaning, which are: knowledge, will, power, hearing, sight, speech, and life.
4- Descriptive attributes, which are: that He the Exalted is All-Knowing, All-Willful, All-Powerful, All-Hearing, All-Seeing, All-Speaking, and Ever-Living. End of quote. The question is: Is it true that the number of Allah's attributes is limited to twenty? And is this division correct and established by the Book, the Sunnah, and scholarly consensus?
A 1: Limiting the attributes of the Lord to twenty attributes or any other number is incorrect; because the attributes of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) are numerous, and none knows them except He, and they are all attributes of perfection, and whatever Allah described Himself with in His Book or His Messenger described Him with in his Sunnah – it is obligatory to affirm and believe in it. They are divided into attributes of essence, such as the Face, the Hands, hearing, and sight, and attributes of actions, such as rising above the Throne, descending to the lowest heaven every night when the last third of the night remains, speech, creation, provision, giving life, and causing death. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
