The twelfth question of the fatwa number ( 5741 )
Q12: I have read in the book [Tawdhih al-'Aqidah al-Mufidah fi 'Ilm al-Tawhid li-Sharh al-Muzdaddah] by my master Ahmad al-Dardir , authored by the late shaykh Husayn 'Abd al-Rahim Maki, Part Two, the curriculum for the fourth year of preparatory school at the Al-Azhar institutes, and corrected by Musa Ahmad , fourth edition 1383 / 1963 CE, that the attributes of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) are twenty attributes according to the view of a group including al-Razi , while in another view, the Imam al-Ash'ari and those who follow his school hold that the attributes are thirteen, and the agreed-upon number according to the book is seven attributes, which are the attributes of meaning. So please inform us, may Allah reward you, about what is obligatory for Allah the Exalted regarding His attributes and their number: are they seven, thirteen, or twenty? If they are twenty, what is the meaning of His being All-Able and His being Alive? Is this book suitable for the correct creed, because I have developed doubt about it, because the author of al-Muzdaddah is an Ash'ari, and I want to follow and emulate the people of the Sunnah and the community , not the Asha'irah or anyone else. So please provide us with a book that discusses the attributes according to the school of the people of the Sunnah ?
A12: The creed of the people of the Sunnah and the community: that Allah the Exalted is described
with attributes of perfection, and that He is described with what He described Himself with in His great Book and what His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) described Him with, without distortion or denial of the divine attributes, and without asking how an attribute is or comparing Allah to creation, in accordance with the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Ash-Shuraa 42:11]. As for the statement that they are twenty, seven, or thirteen, it has no basis; rather, it contradicts the Book, the Sunnah, and scholarly consensus. The book you mentioned is not suitable to rely upon. Here is a copy of [al-'Aqidah al-Wasitiyyah] by the Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah , and the commentary by Shaykh Muhammad Khalil al-Hurras , and a copy of [al-Tadmuriyyah] and [al-Humayriyyah], both by the Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah . The three books mentioned have clarified the school of the people of the Sunnah regarding the names and attributes and the refutation of those who oppose them. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
