Fatwa No. ( 17779 )
Q: We would like to ask about a phenomenon that has spread in this time, which is holding a celebration by some people on the occasion of twenty-five years passing since their birth , and it may be called: (the Silver Festival) or (the Silver Jubilee), and after fifty years pass as well, it is called the Golden Festival, and after seventy-five years, a festival called the Diamond Festival, and so on. And something like this is also held on the opening of some places, such as administrations or companies or institutions, on the occasion of their passing through the aforementioned groups of years, and this is a widespread phenomenon. And we are in this pure land, under the care of the government of tawhid (the oneness of Allah), may Allah the Exalted make it firm, and our scholars from the people of the Sunnah and the community fight religious innovation under the umbrella of the government of the House of Saud. Your Eminence, may Allah preserve you, give us a ruling, may Allah reward you with good, are these celebrations a recommended practice (sunnah) or a religious innovation (bid'ah)? And we ask you by Allah to answer this question so that we may be clear about our matter.
A: It is not permissible to hold parties and distribute gifts and the like on the occasion of years passing since a person's birth, or the opening of a shop, or a school, or any project; because this is from inventing innovative festivals in Islam, and because it involves imitating the disbelievers in doing such things, so it is obligatory to leave that and warn against it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his companions.
