Q: We ask your eminence about giving good news: is it lawful or forbidden? If one person gives another good news of a new baby, or the success of a son or daughter in an exam, or the return of an expected absentee, and gives him a small amount of money, food, or clothing, is that permissible or not? Because this custom is widespread in our country.
A : Giving good news of good things is a recommended practice. This includes the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) giving good news to Ka'b ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) in the story of his repentance, and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to him when he greeted him:Sahih al-Bukhari 4418 Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. Giving a gift to the one who is given good news is also a recommended practice, due to the action of Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him), who gave two garments to the one who gave him good news. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
