Is the newborn named after his father?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 5785 )
Q: I have a son who is the son of my deceased son, who died in a car accident. He was married to two women, and he died while both his wives were pregnant. He had made a will before his death that the newborn would be named after his father: Sarhan ibn Sarhan. The deceased’s name was Sarhan ibn Muhammad Ali. We obtained legal documents from the Qunfudhah court with this name. However, the newborn’s certificate has been held up at the Qunfudhah health office on the grounds that it is not permissible to name the newborn after his father. We hope from Allah, and then from you, that you will issue a ruling on this matter, considering that the newborn’s certificate is pending at the health office and that the child is now eight months old.
A: It is permissible to name the newborn after his father, as in the question: Sarhan ibn Sarhan ibn Muhammad, just as Abdullah ibn Abdullah. There is no harm in that, if Allah wills, whether the person after whom he is named is alive or dead at the time of naming. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
