Q: A lecturer came to our school, and the lecture was about the miracles of the awliya (close friends of Allah) and the righteous . He said in his lecture: 'Umar ibn al-Khattab was delivering a sermon on the pulpit, so he called out to the sariyyah (military expedition) he had sent for war, saying: (O Sariyyah , the mountain). The sariyyah heard his words and retreated to the mountain. Knowing that
there was a long distance between them, is this narration authentic or incorrect, and is it one of the miracles (karamat)?
A : This athar (report) is authentic from 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and its wording is: That 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a sariyyah and appointed a man named Sariyyah to lead it. It is said: While 'Umar was preaching to the people one day, he began shouting from the pulpit: O Sariyyah , the mountain, O Sariyyah , the mountain. It is said: The messenger of the army came forward, and he asked him, and he said: O Commander of the Faithful, we encountered our enemy and defeated them. Then we heard a caller shouting: O Sariyyah , the mountain. So we leaned our backs against the mountain, and Allah defeated them. It was narrated by Ahmad in (Fada'il al-Sahabah), and Abu Nu'aym in (Dalail al-Nubuwwah) and al-Diya' in (al-Muntakha min Masma'at) and Ibn 'Asakir in (his History) and al-Bayhaqi in (Dalail al-Nubuwwah) and Ibn Hajar in (al-Isabah), and he graded its chain as hasan (good), and before him Ibn Kathir in (his History) said: Its chain is good and hasan, and al-Haythami in (al-Sawa'iq al-Muhriqah) also graded its chain as hasan. This is inspiration from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and a karamah (miracle granted to a righteous person) for 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), who is the inspired innovator, as is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It is not in the athar that he (may Allah be pleased with him) was shown the army or that he saw it with his own eyes, nor any of the other weak narrations that the extremists among the Sufis cling to regarding unveiling (kashf) and the creation's knowledge of the unseen. This is false; because knowledge of the unseen is among the attributes of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and what was mentioned in the question above, that 'Umar
(may Allah be pleased with him) called out to the sariyyah he had sent for war, and the sariyyah heard his words and retreated to the mountain, this is ignorance of the meaning of the hadith. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
