The questioner : What is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding what is narrated that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) saw Sariyyah while he was delivering a sermon on the pulpit in a battle in a critical situation with the enemies, and he said to him: "O Sariyyah, the mountain!" Is this story a true event that happened, or is it from imagination? We ask for your guidance?
The Shaykh : This story is famous regarding the Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), that he was addressing the people on Friday on the pulpit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sariyyah ibn Zani'm (may Allah be pleased with him) was the leader of one of the expeditions in Iraq, and the man was besieged. So Allah the Exalted informed the Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar, of what had befallen him. 'Umar addressed him from the pulpit and said to him: "O Sariyyah, the mountain" meaning, ascend the mountain or cling to the mountain, or something similar to these estimates. Sariyyah heard this and took refuge in the mountain, so he was saved. An incident like this is considered among the miracles (karamat) of the awliya (close friends of Allah), for the awliya have miracles that Allah the Exalted performs through their hands to support them and to aid the truth. They existed in previous nations and in this nation, and they will continue to exist until the Day of Resurrection. They are a matter that transcends the ordinary, which Allah the Exalted manifests through the hand of the wali to support him and to back the truth. However, we must be cautious that this does not become confused for us with the states of Satan, such as sorcery and witchcraft, and the like. For these miracles do not occur except through the hands of the awliya of Allah, and the awliya of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) are the believers who are mindful of Allah. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said:[Yunus 10:62-63] The Shaykh al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) took from this verse: "Whoever is a believer and mindful of Allah, he is a wali of Allah". And wilayah (close friendship with Allah) is not by lengthening the prayer beads, widening the sleeve, enlarging the turban, and the mumbling and humming. Rather, wilayah is by faith and mindfulness of Allah. So a person is measured by his faith and his mindfulness of Allah, not by his humming and his claims. Indeed, I say: whoever claims wilayah has contradicted wilayah, for claiming wilayah means self-praise, and self-praise is disobedience to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and disobedience is contrary to mindfulness of Allah. Allah the Exalted said: [An-Najm 53:32] We do not know anyone from the awliya of Allah, the believers who are mindful of Allah, who said to the people, "I am a wali, so gather to me and take from my blessings and my supplications," and the like. We do not know this except from the deceiver liars who deceive the servants of Allah and use the devils of the jinn to reach their goals. And my advice to such people is to fear Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in themselves and in the servants of Allah. And my advice to the servants of Allah is not to be deceived by these people and their like. Yes.
