The questioner : Your Eminence, what are the lessons learned from the statement of 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Sariyyah, the mountain, O Sariyyah, the mountain"?

The Shaykh : From this, it is learned of the manifestation of a karamah (a miracle granted to a righteous person) of the Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). For 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, as mentioned in the narration, was addressing the people on the minbar on Friday when it was revealed to him about Sariyyah, who was in Iraq leading a detachment with him, that the enemy had besieged them. So he said in the middle of the sermon: "O Sariyyah, the mountain", meaning climb the mountain to save himself from his enemy. The people were astonished by this statement from the Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar, in the middle of the sermon, saying: "O Sariyyah, the mountain". He then informed them that the situation was such and such. From this, it is learned of the establishment of the karamahs of the awliya (close friends of Allah). The karamahs of the awliya are any matter that is extraordinary in nature, which Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) performs through the hand of a wali (close friend of Allah) from among His awliya, as an honor to him and a validation of the methodology he follows. And thus, every karamah of a wali is a sign and a mu'jizah (a prophetic miracle) for the Prophet whom he followed.
But who is the wali? The wali is the believing, pious person. Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) said:
(62) Unquestionably, [for] the allies of Allah there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve (63) Those who believed and were fearing Allah
[Yunus 10:62-63]
. And the karamah may be to deliver the wali from hardship, or it may be to honor the religion of Allah to which he calls, from another perspective.
And it is learned from the story, the story of Sariyyah, that a person who is a commander of an army must do what he sees as the safest and best for the army. If the enemy besieges him and he has no power against them, let him take refuge in caves or high mountains from which he can control his enemy and guard against the evil of his enemy.
And it is also learned from this that the Caliph is the supreme commander of the army, because he directed his order to the commander of the army, and he is so.
And it is also learned from this that if news reaches the one who is informed by any means, its ruling is established. In our current time, this karamah may not be available to every person, but Allah has replaced it for His servants with something similar, which is telephone communication, video cameras, and faxes. They send news to the intended recipient with ease, and praise be to Allah.

The questioner : May Allah reward you and bless you. This questioner says, O honorable Shaykh.
