Fatwa No. ( 21888 )
Q: I hope you will kindly clarify the Islamic ruling on looking at and circulating this image that I received via email, and translating what is written beneath it, which means the following: (This is a picture of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) grave, which is not allowed to be seen or opened to visitors, and perhaps not one in ten Muslims has had the opportunity to see this scene. Please pass it on to everyone you know for spiritual benefits, may Allah bless us all. "Ameen.") That was the translation of what came under this image. Please provide information about it and the ruling on looking at it.
and circulating it. My second question is: How should shirk (associating partners with Allah) be defined for the general public, and how should one be alert to it, recognize it, and guard against it? This is because many people believe that such an image, for example, might benefit or harm in some way because it is of the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (if that is actually the case). Please explain this important and, at the same time, subtle topic in detail. May Allah reward you and the Muslims with the best reward.

A : It is not permissible to circulate this image; because circulating it is a means to shirk (associating partners with Allah), through seeking blessing from it and the heart becoming attached to it. It is obligatory to destroy it and warn against it; because the Prophet warned against exaggeration regarding his grave and the grave of anyone else. He said:
O Allah! Do not make my grave an idol that is worshipped.اللهم لا تجعل قبري وثنًا يعبد
Muwatta Malik 9:93
, and he said:
and do not make my grave a place of festivity. But invoke blessings on me, for your blessings reach me wherever you may be.لا تجعلوا قبري عيدًا، وصلوا عليَّ، فإن صلاتكم تبلغني حيث كنتم
Sunan Abi Dawud 2042Sahih (Al-Albani)
, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not take the graves as mosques, for I forbid you from doing so.لا تتخذوا القبور مساجد فإني أنهاكم عن ذلك
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 65:145
. The meaning of taking them as mosques is: praying at them; because that is a means to shirk.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
