Fatwa number ( 16439 )
Q: We work for a company that employs Muslims and others of the Christian and Hindu religions. Some of the non-Muslim employees propose collecting a symbolic amount from employees of different religions to hold a farewell party for a departing foreign employee. The party consists of serving a meal and giving a symbolic gift to the guest of honor. Does the participation of Muslims with their money and persons in this type of party affect their Islamic creed? We hope to be informed, along with our Muslim colleagues, so that we may be clear in our understanding. May Allah reward you with good.
A: A Muslim’s participation with non-Muslims in collecting a symbolic amount to hold a farewell party for non-Muslims is a form of honoring them and indicates loyalty to them. It is not permissible for a Muslim to do this or to participate in it. It is obligatory to call non-Muslims to Islam, to explain its virtues, and to make it attractive to them, so that perhaps Allah may guide them.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
