Q: Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, has made it clear to us that the slaughter of the People of the Book is lawful for us without any doubt or ambiguity. What is the ruling regarding the Zoroastrians and polytheists who have no religion at all, if they join them, believe in them, follow their religion, and imitate them in our time or after the Qur'an was revealed and the Messenger was sent? Are they considered among the People of the two Books, such that we eat their slaughter and marry their women? Or do they remain polytheists and Zoroastrians as long as they do not enter the religion of Islam, even if they join the People of the Book and claim to be of them and follow their religion, because they are not among the People of the Book when the Qur'an addressed the People of the Book and made their slaughter lawful? Rather, they joined them after that, so we do not eat what they slaughter and do not marry? Please inform us; may Allah reward you.
the two books and they are counted among them, so we eat their slaughtered animals and marry their women, or they remain in their idolatry and Zoroastrianism as long as they do not enter the religion of Islam, even if they join the People of the Book and claim to be of them and follow their religion, because they are not of the People of the Book when the Qur'an addressed the People of the Book and made their slaughtered animals lawful, but rather they joined them after that, so we do not eat what they slaughter and we do not marry? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
A: The original ruling regarding the slaughter of non-Muslims is prohibition, except for what is excluded by explicit text regarding the slaughter of the People of the Book ( the Jews and the Christians ). Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Ma'idah 5:5] And by "food" is meant: slaughter. As for those other than the People of the Book, such as the Zoroastrians and the polytheists and the communists , the prohibition remains, so their slaughter is not lawful, nor is it lawful to marry their women, because the noble verse did not exclude anything except the food of the People of the Book and the chaste women among them. And by the People of the Book is meant: the Jews and the Christians , and whoever enters their religion and follows it; he has their ruling regarding the lawfulness of their food and the marriage of the chaste women among them. This is the opinion of the majority of the scholars.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
