The second question of Fatwa No. ( 6044 )
Q2: Is it permissible to kill a cow by shooting it with a rifle when we are unable to catch it and slaughter it? And likewise, sending a dog after a gazelle and saying the name of Allah upon it before sending it?
And killing the gazelle by the dog before its owner reaches it? And is it permissible to eat it?
A2: If we are unable to restrain a beast of livestock or similar edible meat, it is permissible for us to slaughter it by shooting it with something that penetrates it, such as arrows, bullets, or the like. If we catch it alive, we slaughter it; if we find it dead, we eat it. It is also permissible to send a trained dog or similar animal used for hunting after a gazelle or similar wild animal. If it kills it, we eat it; if we find it alive, we slaughter it and eat it, as indicated by the hadith of Abu Thalhah and the hadith of 'Adi ibn Hatim . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
