Passing chickens through electrified water and then piercing the neck with a pointed instrument
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 4345 )
Q1: I slaughter chickens, and here is how I do it: The chickens come on a conveyor belt, hanging by their legs with their heads bent toward the ground, not facing the qiblah. They are submerged in water containing electricity, and they come out to me in a state of intoxication. I take a small knife with a thin tip like the tip of a spear, and I pierce one side of their necks so that the tip comes out the other side, where the blood flows. This is my situation: two thousand chickens per hour, and I work this way for eight hours or more. I tried to slaughter according to the way of Allah and His Messenger, but I was prevented. Is it permissible to eat this animal that dies in this manner? And is the work done by the questioner permissible, or is he disobeying Allah (Mighty and Majestic) by torturing this animal in this manner of slaughter?
A1: If the situation is as described, where the neck of the chicken is pierced with a pointed instrument like a spear from one side of its neck until the tip of the pointed instrument comes out the other side, then it is not permissible to eat it; because it was not slaughtered in the manner prescribed by the Shari'ah, so it becomes carrion. As for passing the chickens through electrified water and piercing their necks with a pointed instrument, it is forbidden; because of the torture of the animal involved in that, and because of the waste of wealth, since it
becomes carrion by that action.
